Unable to configure view layout for built-in Workspace

In Apple's Multitenant Studio project, branch feature/search-combine-spdsearch, they are unable to configure the view layout for the built-in Workspace doctype.  Miguel mentioned that removing their overrides of nuxeo-document-attachments and nuxeo-document-viewer allows the layout to be configured but more investigation was needed to figure out the issue with these elements.
