Element code does not generate when using complex field

I have a complex field complex[]: Complex(string,list) that I want to add to a webui layout. In designer/#/hbrown-SANDBOX/layouts/document/customdoc/create in View mode when I drag the complex->edit element by field to the layout the element does not generate properly. If I go into Code mode I can drag the element to the code editor and the code is generated as expected.
