Using DirectEdit on a XLSX file (or other Office files) (e.g. previously synchronized normally via Drive), you get message boxes and error in both client and server logs regarding the temporary Office file:

This can be easily reproduced on Windows 10 with Office 2016, Drive 4.2.0 bêta and Nuxeo 10.10 + nuxeo-drive-1.8.5
